Sunrise presenter Monique Wright is as excited as the rest of the country about Princess Mary being crowned Queen of Denmark, following the abdication of Queen Margrethe II.
On Tuesday, while reporting on the global story, she noted an incredible royal detail — Queen Margrethe’s remarkable career outside her royal service.

“Queen Margrethe is an extraordinary woman, speaks five languages,” Monique began.
“She had a career — she was an illustrator — so she defied what other royals in Europe have been doing.”
According to the Danish Royal Family’s website, the queen “produced prototypes of the illustrations for Tolkien’s trilogy The Lord Of The Rings” in the 1970s, along with illustrating numerous other books.
She’s also a talented visual artist and designed stage sets and costumes for ballet performances and film throughout her reign, according to the website.
On the show, Mon and co-presenter Matt Doran spoke about the fairytale story of Tasmanian girl-next-door Mary becoming a princess — and now soon to be a queen.
“The neighbour from Tassie now to (become) a Queen,” Matt said.
Mon praised Mary’s public service as a royal.
“She’s lived that part. She’s done everything she possibly could (to succeed in the role) and the Danes just love her,” Mon said.
In her live TV New Year’s Eve address, Queen Margrethe II announced she would abdicate the throne.
She will be succeeded by her eldest son Crown Prince Frederik who is, of course, married to Australian-born Mary.
Margrethe said undergoing successful back surgery in February had contributed to her decision to step down.
“The surgery naturally gave rise to thinking about the future — whether the time had come to leave the responsibility to the next generation,” she said.
“I have decided that now is the right time. On January 14, 2024 — 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father — I will step down as Queen of Denmark
“I leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik.”
Born in 1940, Margrethe has always enjoyed broad support from Danes who are fond of her tactful and creative personality.
The 83-year-old is the longest-serving monarch in Danish history.
